The Prostitution Racket

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Although the middle-class has grown in Pakistan, nearly one-quarter of the population is classified poor as of October 2006. The girl child faces greater risks to survival, is more subject to violence and abuse, and has less access to education, proper nutrition and health services. The low status of children and women is a manifestation of low literacy levels, wide gaps between legislation and enforcement, and limited participation in civil society.

This brings us to the taboo topic of prostitution. We say that slavery has vanished from European civilization, but this is not true. Slavery still exists, but now it applies only to women and its name is prostitution (Victor Hugo). Who is a prostitute? According to the dictionary meaning, one who solicits and accepts payment for sex acts. A prostitute (tawaif, also called hooker, whore, hoe, street walker, sex worker or escort) is a person, most of the time a woman, who has sex with people for money.

Some countries have made prostitution illegal. Even still, some countries like Netherlands have made the same act legal and give licenses to people working under this profession.

Prostitution is sometimes called the "world's oldest profession". There have been stories of it in almost every culture and society. In the times of the British Raj, this act was considered respectable. The 'tawaif' of then was rich in etiquettes and principles. The focus was greatly on the singing and dancing. It was pure innocent entertainment. Rich nobles' from all over the land would send their sons to these tawaifs, so they could learn manners and poise. Over the years, the innocent entertainment got side-tracked and a new generation of prostitutes emerged, who lacked the abilities to sing and dance and were only interested in making money for livelihood by selling their bodies.

After the partition in 1947, Pakistan inherited the historical red-light districts in Lahore and Multan including the infamous Hira Mandi and Shahi Mohalla area. These were well-developed areas and attracted both wealthy clients and those looking for singers and actresses. These set of people are very particular about their caste system. Those having knowledge and skills about the music and dance are called 'mirasi' and those who indulge in sexual activities are called 'kanjars'. It is a great honor for a mirasi to marry in a pure mirasi family and a kanjar to marry in a pure blood of kanjars.

Pakistan is an Islamic country. Islam strictly prohibits the sex-trade due to the declaration of extramarital sex as an illegal activity. Prostitutes in the country, thus, operate underground and in spite of the legal difficulties, and contrary to popular belief, prostitution is thriving in the country. In Pakistan, prostitution was once associated with dark alleys and small red-light districts. Now, it is fast seeping into many neighbourhoods of the Muslim state's urban centers'. It is time for all of us to admit that prostitution is doing a roaring trade within our own borders.

It is so common that girls are now auctioned. Some powerful men either arrange to marry the girl or just kidnap her and then sale her! Auctions of girls are arranged for three kinds of buyers: rich visiting Arabs (sheiks, businessmen, visitors, state-financed medical and university students), the rich local gentry, and rural farmers; all of whom get tired of their property soon and look for a new attraction.

The red light areas in big cities, specially Lahore became restricted, barren and were under continuous raids in the times of President Ayub Khan and then in the reign of President Zia-ul-Haq. In the beginning, this came as a ray of hope to eliminate prostitution from a pure land like Pakistan. But alas, the evil spread like fire from then onwards. The result was that these women just spread out in different parts of the city, making it harder to track them down. What did we achieve? A prostitute is no longer the one who lives in the slums such as the Shahi Mohalla. A girl who lives two streets from our house in DHA, Islamabad, is a prostitute. There is no criminal evidence against her, so you might as well mind your own business. There is no stopping to this business!

People consider it a disgrace to be associated to women like that and even then, we regularly find stories on how the most powerful people of our country travel all the way to such places to find the pleasure, they other wise would not be entitled to.

We have to understand that it's not totally the prostitutes who are wrong. We are equally responsible for their 'careers' and conditions. They are not given any option, any chance to become one of us. They are not provided with equal opportunities. It's not the liability of a child who is born in the house of a prostitute. Whether they like it or not, they have to do the same business. Why, because it's 'their' societal pressure, it's the only way they can earn a living, because it's the wish of their mother and father (if they know him). They have to obey their folks and not complying with the wishes of your parents is considered as disregard. Those coming in our society will not be accepted and instead they will have to fall back on drying their stomachs till death.

The more talented tawaifs have their aim to enter into the film industry. Once they do get a break, they deny any relation to their original place of birth in the fear of not being accepted, regardless of their pious character. Officially it is illegal, but unofficially it is tolerated. Many times, when a righteous SSP is appointed, a customary raid is carried out to round up a few pimps and a few women, but they are released after a night or two and everything goes back to normal.

In a survey, I found out that ninety-five per cent of the teenage prostitutes in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore were sexually abused by their close relatives, friends and teachers before they adopted the profession of granting sexual favors for payment. In sharp contrast to the common assumption that prostitutes normally belong to the uneducated segment of society, the survey has also found that 74 per cent of them were undergraduates.

The prostitutes presented in the Bollywood and Lollywood films are actually quite opposite from the reality. There are some prostitutes who charge high and like to be referred as 'call-girls', the more modern term. But in the same society, there are prostitutes who work for Rs. 10-20. This is the level of illiteracy and poverty. The level of abortions for these women touches the sky as well. They do not indulge in any wooing activities and 'get to the business' immediately. This also increases the level of diseases. HIV aids and Syphilis are the most common diseases transmitted through sex. And there is no cure to it unless counselling and awareness is available.

Clause 6 of the millennium development goals (MDG's) of the UN focuses on how to stop/ prevent the spread of HIV Aids. If any one of the clause in the MDG fails, the whole project is considered to be a failure. Recognizing the importance of this is the first step. Every possible effort should be made to re-enact a sense of humanity and ethics. Awareness should be created. If we can not eradicate it, at least we can try to subdue it.

On May 1998, a Pakistani woman was threatened by the Supreme Court to severe punishment, if she did not allow to her ex-husband to have sex with her, whenever he wanted. Although she was remarried then, the Court of Pakistan disbanded any respect to her happy married life. What right do we have to judge the prostitutes when the law makers of the country are being insensible on their decisions? Why should a woman have extramarital affair when it is clearly not allowed in Islam or anywhere else? Is it morally, socially and ethically correct?

The activity of song and dance, as practiced in the Shahi Muhallah and many other places for that matter, facilitates the act of prostitution. In the olden days, singing and dancing and the 'entertainment' must've have been the main focus for such activities. But there is no denial to the fact that all of these contribute in enticing a man to get him to pay more. From amongst these men, there is at least 50% ratio of those who pay even more to get the sexual pleasures. We have to understand that the prostitutes will continue to increase in number a long as they stay in business, as long as there are customers. The basic economic concept applies here: supply is equal to demand. I will end my article on the lines of Don Quixote:

"Sanity may be madness but the maddest of all is to see life as it is and not as it should be."

New Metal Pretreatment Technology From Henkel Helps Ford

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The partnership between the Ford Motor Company and Henkel Corporation led to the development of the first production vehicle that did not undergo the usual coating process. The new production vehicle did go through a non-phosphate Bonderite conversion coating process which is a new technology developed by Henkel Corporation.

The use of the said technology resulted to lowered production costs and made the vehicle assembly paint pretreatment operations more efficient. The process is also environment friendly because of lower amount of harmful gases released during the manufacturing process. The innovation shows the way for a cleaner pretreatment of metals that are not only employed by the automotive industry but other sectors as well.

Michael Vandelinder, the chief engineer for the Ford Motor Company Paint Engineering team, stated that the new treatment is a great help to Ford in terms of innovation. He says, "This new pretreatment technology from Henkel helps Ford lead the industry in innovation while reducing operating costs and minimizing the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes." Vandelinder also added that they will "continue to develop, validate, and launch materials and processes that deliver value to our customers through technology." The statement issued is based on the fact that the Bonderite coating process in addition to reducing waste also reduces volatile organics compounds and carbon dioxide emission during the process of manufacturing.

On the part of Henkel Corporation, Dan Wohletz, the vice president for automotive in North America has this to say: "This innovation is a result of Henkel's commitment to deliver revolutionary technologies to valued customers like Ford." The vice president further added that "this is another example of a Henkel innovation that enhances our leadership in the metal pretreatment industry."

Indeed, the innovation has reaffirmed the corporation at the top of its class. With continued dedication to the improvement of their currently used technology, the company will surely raise the bar for excellence in their field time and time again. As of now, it looks as if the company has no intention to slow down in their efforts with the development of better processes and products.

Henkel is the largest company when it comes to adhesives, sealants and surface treatments servicing the automotive industry. The company is known for their extensive background in the industry just like EBC pads are known for being of high quality and superior stopping power. They offer a complete lineup of solutions to the entire process of automobile development. The company boasts of an expertise in metal pretreatment on all areas of the manufacturing process of a car like the automotive body, interior, chassis, electronics, and powertrain. Henkel also offers a wide variety of brands that are of great help in the automotive industry. Brands such as Loctite, Teroson, Autophoretic, Frekote, Multan, and Bonderite are under the Henkel Corporation.

The company also uses the serves other industry apart from the automotive sector. Henkel also has vested interest on electronics, aerospace, metal, durable goods, consumer goods, maintenance and repair, and packaging industries.

The partnership between the two companies will surely not stop with the development of the non-phosphate Bonderite conversion coating process. Continued development in this field will greatly reduce or even eliminate the amount of greenhouse gases produced during the manufacturing process of a car. While the development of the new technology will be of great help in protecting the environment, that innovation alone cannot entirely save the deterioration of the environment due to harmful gasses. More environmentally friendly processes must be developed in order to significantly reduce the amount of hazardous gases being released into the atmosphere.

THE TOMB OF SHAH RUKN-E-ALAM-Multan

The mausoleum of Shah Rukn-e-Alam is also situated on the fort mound. The Shaikh was the son of Pir Sadar-Al-Din Arif born at Multan on the 9th of Friday Ramazan 649/26 November 1251. He was the grandson and successor of Shaikh Baha-Al-Din Zakariya. Shaikh Rukn-i-Alam (Rukn-al-Din) died on the 7th of Friday (735/3 Jamadial-Awwal, January 1335). He was buried in the mausoleum of his grandfather, according to his own will. After sometime, however, his coffin was transferred to the present mausoleum. It was constructed, according to a popular belief, by Ghiyas-al-Din Tughluq (1340-1350) during the days of his governorship of Depalpur, but was given by Feruz Shah Tughluq to the descendents of Shah Rukn-I-Alam for the latter's burial. The mausoleum of Rukn-I-Alam has been admired by not only the travelers and chroniclers but also by the art-historians and archaeologist who wrote the architectural history of the subcontinent.

Faisalabad is the third largest city of Pakistan and is located in the East-Central part of Punjab Province of Pakistan, to the West of Lahore in the area called "Rechna Doab Upland". It is bounded by Hafizabad district in the North, Sheikhupura district, in the East, and the Ravi River in the South, and the Jhang district in the West. Formerly this city was known as Lyallpur till 1979, on Sir Charles James Lyall, the erstwhile British Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, who founded this city in 1890. The name Faisalabad was given in honour of king Faisal of Saudi Arabia. Faisalabad is also known as the Manchester of Pakistan. This is because it is famed for its textile mills.

The main market area of Faisalabad is called the Ghanta Ghar. This is actually the Clock Tower and was built in 1895. D Ground is the second most important market area of Faisalabad after Ghanta Ghar.

Faisalabad is affected by extreme climatic conditions. Temperatures range from 4 degrees centigrade in winter to 48 degrees in summer. It is basically very dry and rainfall is very scanty. The monsoons are from July to September. Sometimes during winter, there is rainfall in this district.

Faisalabad is connected by rail and road with Lahore and Multan and by air with Karachi and Lahore. Faisalabad has been fed with modern motorways from Lahore and Rawalpindi. The Faisalabad International Airport is situated approximately 10 kms from the centre of the city that is the Clock Tower. This airport caters to both domestic and international flights.

Important industries include textiles, food, synthetics and chemicals. The West Pakistan Agricultural University founded in 1909 is located at Faisalabad. Punjab - The Land Of Five Rivers

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Punjab---the heart of Pakistan.
The land of five waters, and five seasons, known for its fertility, colorful panorama and exquisitely serene and clean atmosphere. Its waters have seen life being quenched since centuries. Its trees have embraced the wind that was fragrant by the immortal stories like Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal and Mirza Sahiban.
The soil which, nurtured sufi poets like Baba Farid, Ali Hajveri, Bulhe Shah, Shah Hussain, Mian Muhammad Bakhsh and Waris Shah.
Punjab has seen the starving of Budha and the wandering of Guru Nanak in search of truth. Its terrain has kept the secrets of Indus Valley civilizations along the River Indus at Harappa and many more un-discovered places.
Waters still sing here, winds never forget to whisper and rains know how do dance in Mon Soon.

So it is not a bad idea either to visit this place which is gifted with mountains, rivers, planes, fruits, trees, artifacts, historical monuments and the largest salt range of the world.

Here we are to present the worth seeing places that can make you feel the glory and grandeur of almost all parts of Punjab.

1. Taxila _A scent of the Past

_A promise for the Future

An important city of ancient Gandhara and a place that enlightened the Budha and one of the greatest archeological sites the world possesses today.
The ruins of Taxila, scattered about 30 KM away from Rawalpindi, represent the historical value of over 1000 years ago (around 500 BC to 500 AD). This place has the honor to have the world's best known university at that ancient time offering subjects like law, medicine, arts etc.
At Taxila, various sites are scattered over a large area encompassing; Bhir Mound, Dharmarajika, Budhist Stupa and Monastery.
Moreover, one could find Sirsukh City remains, the Shrine of Double-headed eagle, Jandial temple, Sirsukh City and Jaulian Budhist Monastery etc.
The Taxila museum is known for its Gandhara artifacts, a rare blend of Greek and Budhist Art. This museum also has a collection of old coins, utensils, jewelry, toys and pottery manifesting the highlights of the life style of ancient Taxila.

2. Harappa _Rediscovering History

The Indus Valley civilization covers almost the exact area where Pakistan exists today. Mehrgarh in Balochistan, Mohenjo Daro in Sindh and Harappa in Punjab possess the clandestine of a common society.
Excavations have proved that around 3000 BC. Harappa was inhabited by nomadic tribes. The remains show a prosperous and comfortable life in that old epoch with emphasis on sanitation and everyday facilities. This land has trade relations with Egypt, the other developed civilization of the ancient world.
The archeological museum at the site entrance may take you to the wonder world of past through found artifacts.

The Salt Range _An Evaporated Sea

It is undoubtedly a geologist's dream with variety of minerals and rocks. Having great natural beauty, this area varies in height between 750 and 1500 meters and climate is noticeably cooler in summer. The largest Salt Mine of the world, Khewra also exists here. On the other hand, Kallar Kahar with its salt lake and orchard, centuries old Hindu Temples at Ketas and pilgrimage sites are breathtaking.
This is the sea that extended over the Indus Plain and the Potowar Plateau that evaporated 600 million years ago. Rocks and fossils at this site provide the missing links of the story of earth. Around Khewra at Nandna, famous Muslim traveler and historian al-Beruni measured the circumference of the earth during 11th century.

3. Jhelum _Land of the Brave

Jhelum is located at the base of the Potowar Range, overlooking the endless green fields of the Punjab. Alexander the great crossed the river at this place and fought with Raja Poras, whom the famous quotation is related to, when he answered the Alexander,

"As a king would treat a king"
The famous Rohtas Fort, built by Sher Shah Suri is also located here which, is still standing against all odds. People here are endearingly hospitable, looking to welcome you with warmth and fervor.

This city has a unique feature of housing tombs and saints, more than any place of the world. Towering shrines made of brick, stone and wood add to the serenity of this place. Shrines of Shah Rukn e-Alam, Hazrat Bahaudin Zikirya and Shah Shams Tabrez are the most famous and visited ones. The famous metropolitan city and provincial capital of today, has got so much to speak of history. It holds within its bustling bazaars, historical monuments and narrow streets, the heritage of hundreds of years, the culture of royal tradition and force of spiritualism.
The shrine of Hazrat Ali Hajver known as Data Darbar welcomes everybody at the entrance of the city, while the walled city culture still grasps the close relationship between people.
Lahore was founded by Loh, the son of Rama Chandra, however the recorded history of Lahore dates back to 1021 AD when Lahore was conquered by Mahmood Ghaznavi who made it the capital of his Ghaznavi Empire. Then Mughals gave so much importance to this city, by awarding it the famous architecture in the form of gardens, mosques, tombs and the famous Fort. Shalamar Garden by Shahjehan and Badshahi mosque by Aurangzeb are the emblems of great history this city possesses. Jahangir and Nur Jehan are also buried here. Anarkali Bazar, Toligton Market, Lahore Museum and Punjab University (old Campus) jewels the famous Mall Road (Thandi Sarak). The British introduced here a combination of Mughal, Gothic and Victorian style of architecture.
Lahore offers a great deal more than just monuments, a variety of art galleries, museums, theatres and shopping arcades along with the cool tree-lined avenues, lush green lawns, fountains and modern high rise buildings.

Sohail Tanvir In A Morning with Farah Post by Zagham

Player profile Full name Sohail Tanvir Born December 12, 1984, Rawalpindi, Punjab Current age 23 years 178 days Major teams Pakistan, Rajasthan Royals, Rawalpindi, Rawalpindi Rams, Rawalpindi Region Batting style Left-hand bat Bowling style Left-arm medium-fast, Slow left-arm orthodox Profile The Rawalpindi born allrounder made his first-class debut against Peshawar in October 2004 but failed to impress with bat or ball. However, in his second match, against Multan, Sohail Tanvir scored an unbeaten 97 while taking three wickets but has played only 17 first-class matches since (a total of 19 in three seasons). Tanvir has established himself as a batting allrounder and his unbeaten 124 (his second first-class century) in the Pentangular Cup 2007 match against Sind further established that point. He also represented Pakistan Academy on their tour of Bangladesh and his fine all-round performance on that tour and against Australia A in the ODI series at home prompted the selectors to name him as Shoaib Akhtar's replacement in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20. The decision came as a surprise, however, as Tanvir is yet to take a wicket in the ten Twenty20 matches he has played. His wrong-footed action, however, caused batsmen a lot of problems and emerged as the surprise package in the ICC World Twenty20. Although not picked for the Test team, Tanvir was back in Pakistan colours in the ODI series against South Africa. He went on to record a stunning 6 for 14 for Rajasthan in the ...

Zaid Hamid:brasstacks-Yeh Ghazi Episode11; Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi Part3

brasstacks program Yeh Ghazi on Timeline of the Muslim History. In this episode Zaid Hamid discusses the campaigns of Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi in the subcontinent. It was Hindus who took the offensive & their Raja Jay Pal launched an assault on Ghazni during the time of Mahmud's father Sebuktagin. He suffered a demoralizing defeat & lost fair proportion of his land. When Sultan Mahmud came to power he again took the field to avenge his defeat. But this time the thrashing was even greater & so much was he disheartened by this that he committed suicide.Sultan Maḥmud was the first to carry the banner of Islām into the heart of India Sultan Mahmud was one of the greatest Iconoclasts in the History. When approached to spare the idol of Thanesar, highly revered by the Hindus, in exchange of substantial "annual tribute and fifty elephants and jewels to a considerable amount", Mahmud simply turned it down saying: "The religion of the faithful inculcates the following tenet: 'That in proportion as the tenets of the Prophet are diffused, and his followers exert themselves in the subversion of idolatry, so shall be their reward in heaven;' that therefore, it behoved him, with the assistance of God, to root out the worship of idols from the face of India. How, then, should he spare Thanesar?" He repeated similar sentiments when, at Somnath, he was offered a huge compensation to spare the idol. Even his nobles pointed to him that "he could not obtain so much treasure by breaking the idol ...

Allama Haqnawaz Jhangvi Shaheed Rta/: HAQEEQAT-E-MAZHAB E SHIA /Peshawar---3/8

Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi Shaheed (rta) At 8:00 pm on Thursday night, 26 Rajab 1410 AH, conforming to the 22 February 1990, the stalwart and founder of "Sipah-e-Sahabah (ra)", the Vice President of Jamiat-ul-Ulama Punjab, Principal of Jamia Mehmoodia, member of the United Ulama Council and Sunni Ulama Front, mouthpiece and orator of the Sahabah (Radiallahu Anhu), Hazrat Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi (Rahmatullah Alaye) was martyred. "To Allah do We belong to Him is our return". Hazrat Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi was born in 1954 in the town of Jhang. After completing his primary education in Arabic and Theology, he left for Multan where he studied in the renowned Islamic University, Khair-ul-Madaris. He qualified as an Islamic Scholar/Alim in 1972 from this university at the tender age of 19. After which he once more returned to his home town, Jhang. Maulana burdened his then feeble shoulders with the arduous task of patronizing that enviable organization, "Sipah-e-Sahabah (ra)" and like a true soldier, he used all his resources for the dignity and honor of the Sahabah (Radiallahu Anhu). Although previously many Ulama had directed their resources to this worthy cause, their efforts are pale in comparison to the enviable dedication of Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi. Maulana had breathed new life into the Sipah-e-Sahabah (ra) and fought tooth and nail against the Shias, till alas, he was martyred this holy cause. Maulana argued that we are so sensitive regarding the dignity and honor ...

Home Finance And Home Mortgage Options In Pakistan

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Pakistan, like many countries worldwide, is booming in the property sector. The prices are only escalating. Investors are targeting places like Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Islamabad for property due to the prices valuing at million US$. In fact, a house like Gulberg with just one kanal is sold for US$200,000, with an increase by $300,000 for a two-kanal house, and the like. The property prices, compared to what they were 5 years back, have more than tripled. People are holding the properties for the price to move up even higher in future. But will the price balloon puncture in the near future?

Many people are entering into the market with buying properties. Investments are being made in projects that would take a few years for development. On the city outskirts, many housing complexes are forthcoming; the houses valued in lakhs. Still, people are not interested in selling them off. This is because is a selling pressure is seen, the prices will deflate and there will be a sharp correction in property prices. Instead, people are opting for loans to enter the property market, but since the interest rates on these loans are high, and people are holding, and not selling the properties, there have been many cases of defaults. This is a major concern.

For buying a hew house, you need to make many decisions. Loan is the biggest decision here. Most people cannot finance a new house upfront so they invariably rely on loans from various financial institutions. The officer in charge of the loan will require you to bring various supporting documents to ensure that you have the ability to pay back the loan amount. A credit check is always done before extending a loan.

This credit check is a credit report that enabled the lender to have an idea of how well or otherwise you have been performing when it comes to clearing your debts in time. If there had been some general reason for the inability to pay the past loans, like leaving a job or falling sick, some companies do help you get your credit report back on the normal terms, and they extend you the loan. The approvals of loans take quite some time.

Most banks and other financial institutions ensure that you are able to render the loan repayment to them when the time comes. The loan officers will explain in details regarding some unfamiliar things that you might come across. In case of a mortgage, the contract is a long-term one between you and the lender, usually a bank, and the repayment must take place in an agreed period of time. In this case, the bank can exercise their right to take away the home from you if you are unable to pay back the loan. They can't ask you to follow instructions set by them to maintain the house, but can claim the house as theirs incase of default. So this is an obligation between you and the bank that you will render the loan repayment well in time. The loan officers are always willing to do their bit to make sure that you get the best deal in business.
