Pakistan is a republic in South Asia, marking the region, South Asia converges with Central Asia and the Middle East.It has 1046 km (650 miles) coastline along the Arabian Sea on the south by Afghanistan and Iran in neighboring West India, East and China in the far northeast. Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world and is the second largest Muslim country with a majority. Its territory was part of the pre-partitioned British India and has along history of colonization and culture, including the Indus Valley Civilization. Most of its territory was being the first millennium BC, conquered by the Persians and Greeks and ruled by them for centuries. For the rest of the region's history was part of a larger Indian kingdom or under local or regional rulers. Later arrivals and conquests include those Baloch Arabs, Afghans, Turks and Mongols. The area was incorporated into British India in the nineteenth century.After independence the country has experienced both periods of strong economic growth and military, and periods of instability, with the secession of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). It has 4 provinces Sindh, Punjab, NWFP and Balouchistan. The major cities are Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Hyderabad, Rawalpindhi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan.
